A fraud alert on your credit report tells companies requesting
your credit report that they must contact you regarding any requests
for credit. It's good for three months, after which you must contact
the credit reporting agencies again to have the fraud alert placed
for three more months. The only way to place a permanent fraud
alert is to provide documentation such as a police report that
an actual case of identity theft has occurred.
If you want to simplify this process, I recommend LifeLock, a company
that will place the fraud alerts with all three credit reporting
agencies and renew them for you every three months, plus they do
a lot more to protect your credit. Click
